​​​​​​Tony Gwynn  was a lefthanded throwing outfielder who played 20 years (1982 to 2001) with the San Diego Padres.  He won the National League Batting Title eight times in his career, including three in a row from 1987 to 1989, and four in a row from 1994 through 1997.  He finished with a .338 career batting average, and other than his first year when he batted just .289, he batted over .300 for the next 19 consecutive years, including 7 years over .350 and a high of .394 in the 1994 season.

Gwynn also lead the league in hits 7 times (5 of them with over 200 hits) and he finished his career with 3141 hits (19th all-time).  He had 543 doubles (35th all time), 85 triples, 1383 runs scored, and 319 stolen bases.  He had only 434 strikeouts, compared to 790 walks, on 10232 plate appearances.

Gwynn made the All-Star team 15 times.  He was also a very good outfielder who won the Gold Glove Award 5 times.  Gwynn was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.​​
